CE to coordinate flu fight from forum

April 06, 2013
Chief Executive CY Leung expressed his concern today over the new H7N9 avian influence virus, and said measures at four levels will enhance Hong Kong's ability to prevent cases occurring here.

Speaking to the media today at the airport before attending the Boao Forum in Hainan, he said he will coordinate and follow up on departments’ preventive and surveillance measures from the forum.

The four levels include the whole country and the Mainland, global, local and personal.

Mr Leung thanked the Central, provincial and regional governments for their support, adding Hospital Authority representatives and microbiology expert Prof Yuen Kwok-yung have obtained first-hand information on the disease after a recent exchange in Shanghai.

He said the SAR Government offices on the Mainland will continue to report the latest virus news to Hong Kong.

Internationally, Mr Leung said the Government will liaise with the World Health Organisation and overseas disease control and prevention centres, listening to their advice and opinions about preventing the virus's spread.

Locally, he said the Government will strengthen tests on imported chickens at boundary checkpoints, and increase random temperature checks on travellers.

Mr Leung said the Government has sufficient masks and medicines, adding the public need not rush to buy them.

He has urged people to pay attention to their personal hygiene, and consult a doctor immediately if they develop flu symptoms, and to reveal their travel history to doctors.
