Toddler ill with NDM-1

February 20, 2013

The Centre for Health Protection is investigating confirmed a case of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in a year-old boy.

He travelled to the Mainland from November to December last year and in January, and was hospitalised there during the period.

He was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital on February 12 and was discharged on February 14.

He is stable. He tested positive for NDM-1 Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae.

This is the 23rd detected case of NDM Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Hong Kong.

Bacteria harbouring the NDM gene are commonly resistant to multiple drugs, limiting treatment options and making severe clinical infections difficult to treat.
