Alert on 4 more infant formulae issued

August 10, 2012
Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man today urged parents not to use four types of infant formulae, as their iodine content is low and may harm infants.

They are Meiji Mirufi HP for children up to 36 months old (850g can), Morinaga for those up to 12 months old (820g), Morinaga for those up to 12 months old (13g x 10 packets), and Wakodo for those up to nine months old (13g x 10 packets).

The Centre for Food Safety has informed the trade of the survey result. The trade should stop selling these products immedately. It also urges parents to use other brands, or adopt brestfeeding.

Dr Ko inspected a Maternal & Child Health Centre in Sai Wan Ho today, which provides blood tests for babies up to eight months old.

He said the Government will complete testing for Japanese formulae as soon as possible this week, and complete checks on formulae from other countries by the end of this month.

The Government is preparing to regulate the nutritional composition of infant formulae and nutrition labelling, he added.
