Man with NDM infection dies

The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a case of New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase Carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae in a 30-year-old man, the 10th case in Hong Kong.
 
The patient, with underlying illness, was admitted to a Mainland hospital at the end of June for surgery. He later fell ill and was admitted to North District Hospital on July 17. His condition deteriorated and he died on July 23.
 
He tested positive for NDM Carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae.
 
His home contacts are asymptomatic.
 
NDM is an enzyme which can inactivate antibiotics.
