Man ill with flesh-eating disease
June 13, 2012
The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a case of flesh-eating disease, necrotising fasciitis, involving a 77-year-old man with underlying illness.
The Southern District man had lower limb swelling on June 9. He was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital the next day and was diagnosed as having necrotising fasciitis. Doctors performed a double amputation the same day.
He is now in intensive care and is stable.
Anyone with signs of infection, such as increasing redness, pain and swelling, should consult a doctor immediately.
