Hand-foot-mouth disease peak to start

May 04, 2012
Seventy-eight reports of hand, foot and mouth disease outbreaks in institutions have been recorded so far this year, the second highest figure for the period in the last five years.

The Centre for Health Protection has also received 13 Enterovirus-71 infection reports so far this year.

The majority involved mild symptoms, apart from one case, involving a three-year-old boy, who suffered neurological complications.

The traditional summer peak season of hand, foot and mouth disease and Enterovirus-71 is May to July, so infections are expected to increase in the coming weeks.
