Strict screening of overseas doctors assured
October 26, 2011
The Hospital Authority has pledged to conduct stringent screening of overseas doctors' applications and stresses they will not affect local doctors' training opportunities.
The authority today issued a statement in response to a group of medical professionals towards the recruitment of non-local doctors to practise with limited registration.
A special task force inside the authority reviewed 160 non-local doctors' applications in September.
At least 29 of them possessed a specialist qualification comparable to the Intermediate Examinations of the constituent Colleges of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.
More than 10 applicants have been interviewed with the clinical departments and will be submitted to the Medical Council of Hong Kong for approval of limited registration.
All doctors granted limited registration will be permitted to practise only in public hospitals and will not affect local doctors' specialist-training opportunities.
There are about 160 doctors practising in Hong Kong with limited registration at designated medical institutions.
