Specialist overseas doctors no 'threat'

October 26, 2011
Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow says the employment of specified temporary registration doctors working in special departments of the Hospital Authority will not pose any competition to local private practitioners.

Speaking to the media after attending a radio talk show today, Dr Chow said he noted local medical practitioners' concerns about hiring overseas doctors.

“They have to understand that the employment of these specified temporary registration doctors working in special departments of the Hospital Authority will not pose any competition to local private practitioners. I think they would definitely help the public medical sector to continue their services and also be able to cope with the capacity,” he said.

He said there is a particular shortage of doctors working in the Accident & Emergency Departments at the moment and the Hospital Authority is concentrating on hiring experienced doctors in that area.
