Augmentin tablets recalled

July 18, 2011
The Department of Health today ordered GlaxoSmithKline to recall the antibiotic Augmentin 375mg tablet, because samples were found to contain plasticisers.

GlaxoSmithKline could not provide a satisfactory explanation as to the source of the plasticisers, bringing the product quality into question.

The levels of plasticisers are considered unlikely to cause acute harmful effects if taken according to the recommended dosage, the department said. It will seek the Department of Justice's advice on possible legal actions against the manufacturer.

Augmentin 375mg tablet is an antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infections. Patients who are using the drug for treatment should consult their doctors or pharmacists as soon as possible and should not just stop using the drug, the department said. That could have implications on both the courses of the diseases under treatment, and antibiotic resistance development.

Anyone who has taken the drug and is either in doubt or feeling unwell should seek professional advice from healthcare providers.
