Tobacco duty almost doubled

February 23, 2011

Smokers will have to pay 50 cents more per cigarette as Financial Secretary John Tsang announced a 41.5% duty increase on tobacco today.

In his 2011-12 Budget speech, Mr Tsang said studies by the World Health Organisation have clearly shown increasing tobacco duty is an effective means of tobacco control.

Customs officers will boost enforcement to contain cigarette smuggling. The Government will also enhance smoking cessation services, he added.
