Gov't welcomes film venture

March 16, 2016

Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So has welcomed a joint venture between Warner Bros Entertainment, China Media Capital and Television Broadcasts Limited to produce and distribute films globally and its decision to be headquartered in Hong Kong.

While attending the joint venture's inaugural press conference today, Mr So noted that its choice of Hong Kong as its base highlighted the international flavour of Hong Kong's creative industries and was a vote of confidence by investors in the city's long-term development.

He added that in recent years the local film industry has helped develop the Mainland film market and has established an extensive network of business connections. It has accumulated extensive experience in international marketing and distribution as well as market development.

In recent years, most of the Hong Kong-Mainland co-produced films and some Mainland films have been sold to overseas distributors through Hong Kong companies.

"These advantages will facilitate the development of Hong Kong into a bridgehead for tapping the global film market and enable Hong Kong to play its role as a super-connector between the Mainland and the rest of the world," Mr So noted.

He also expressed hope that this exciting venture brings new opportunities for Hong Kong's film production talent and promotes further development of local creative industries.
