An amendment regulation updating the classes of electrical and electronic apparatus that can cause interference to communications equipment and services, as well as the control limits, will be tabled at the Legislative Council on June 4 for implementation on November 21.
The Telecommunications (Control of Interference) (Amendment) Regulation 2014 was gazetted today.
The Commerce & Economic Development Bureau said there is a need to bring new types of apparatus, like LED lighting equipment, which can emit interference but are not yet covered by the current regulation, as they have become increasingly popular.
The amendment will also align the control regime with international practices. It makes direct reference to an expanded set of widely recognised standards.
The Communications Authority may include new control limits or remove outdated control limits from the control regime by order published in the Gazette.
To allow sufficient time for the industry to ensure products comply with the new control limits, the amendment allows a one-year transitional period.
