Gregory So visits SSPo
January 22, 2013
Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So visited Sham Shui Po today to inspect a non-governmental organisation and a social enterprise, and meet a family to learn more about life for the district's grassroots.
He first visited the Society for the Blind and was briefed by its staff on the comprehensive services they offer, such as helping the visually impaired to utilise information and communications technology in their daily lives.
The society has an online digital library and a sharing portal providing a variety of information, to keep the visually impaired abreast of the latest social developments.
Mr So said promoting the adoption of accessible design for websites and funding the provision of audio description services for films are among the various measures implemented by the Government in its drive to foster an inclusive society.
He then visited a new-arrival family to learn about their living conditions and needs.
He also visited Bonham Strand to see the operation of its workshop. The social enterprise has adopted an innovative business model which employs experienced tailors to teach rehabilitated youths how to make suits. The products are well received with their "Made in Hong Kong" brand.
Mr So later met with Sham Shui Po District Council members to discuss district matters. The meeting was held in Cafe Imagine, which is managed by the YMCA College of Continuing Education to provide catering training. It also provides space for displaying the works of local young artists to help promote a creative atmosphere in the community.
