Q&A:  Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So says the proposed Competition Bill will bring advantages to consumers.

Competition Bill aids consumers

July 12, 2011
Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So says the Competition Bill will bring advantages to consumers and avoid the abuse of a substantial degree of market power in a market.

Speaking during a live question-and-answer session on the Chief Executive’s Office Facebook page Upper Albert Road today, Mr So said the proposed bill will allow consumers to choose products of better quality, more reasonable price and better design, or more advanced technology.

He said the bill is not aimed to intervene in the market structure but to avoid the abuse of a substantial degree of market power in a market.

It will also avoid anti-competition behaviours, he said, adding the bill will help protect small- and medium-enterprises’ right to compete in the market.

Mr So said the Government will enhance publicity on the Competition Bill and consumer rights while a competition commission will be established to investigate and bring proceedings before the Competition Tribunal.

“I am thankful for the views and questions conveyed by our friends on the Internet. I trust this exchange has deepened their understanding of the Competition Bill. The law is closely linked to our daily lives. The Government will endeavor to construct a healthy and competitive market and protect consumers from the influence of anti-competitive behaviour,” Mr So said.
