Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Rita Lau today tendered her resignation to the Chief Executive for health reasons. Under Secretary Greg So will act in her post.
Chief Executive Donald Tsang said he respects Mrs Lau's decision and has passed it to the Central People's Government, adding he will soon nominate a successor.
He said occasional sick leave and resignations by officers for health reasons do not affect Government operations.
"We have a well established system of acting appointment and replacement."
Mr Tsang commended Mrs Lau for her commitment to her work since she joined the Government in 1976.
"Rita is an officer with exceptional ability and talent. She is always positive despite enormous pressure and frequent exhaustive overseas visits and duties. She always gives her best to Hong Kong.
"Her departure is a great loss to all of us. I thank Rita for her long public service and contribution to Hong Kong and wish her a very speedy and full recovery."
Chief Secretary Henry Tang also said he is saddened by Mrs Lau's resignation and wishes her a speedy and full recovery, adding he respects and admires her for her dedication and seriousness about her work.
Mrs Lau recently had surgery to remove a tumour and doctors ordered her to rest. She decided to resign saying it is a responsible move in the public interest.
She thanked the Central Government, the Chief Executive and her colleagues for their support.
