A new name, Ampil, has been adopted for tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2014, replacing Bopha, the Hong Kong Observatory announced today.
Cambodia proposed Ampil, a tropical fruit more commonly known as tamarind.
The United Nations Economic & Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific - World Meteorological Organisation Typhoon Committee endorsed the new name at its 46th session in Bangkok in February.
A country or region which has suffered serious human casualties and economic losses from a tropical cyclone can propose to remove the storm’s name from the name list. In 2012 Super Typhoon Bopha caused 1,100 deaths and the disappearance of 800 people.
