Environment chief visits Macau

December 07, 2013

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong visited waste management facilities in Macau today to learn about the city's environmental infrastructure.

Mr Wong and a delegation of 30 representatives from the Islands District Council and local organisations met Environmental Protection Bureau officials and visited a waste-to-energy facility at Taipa.

Occupying four hectares, the plant has six incineration units which together can treat 1,700 tonnes of waste per day, while also using recovered heat energy for electricity generation.

Mr Wong noted municipal solid waste management in Macau is practical, as is the case in other advanced cities, using modern technology to treat waste effectively and turn it into energy. Hong Kong could benefit from Macau's experience, he said.

He said he hoped the visit could enable Hong Kong people to learn more about Macau's waste-to-energy facility and serve as a reference for Hong Kong to develop such facilities.
