Typhoon Vicente makes landfall

Typhoon Vicente has made landfall after wreaking havoc on Hong Kong, and public transport has largely resumed normal operations. 
 
The storm approached Hong Kong yesterday, and the Observatory raised the No 8 signal just before 6pm. The storm intensified and moved closer to Hong Kong, prompting the Observatory to raise the signal to No 9 at 11:20pm, and then to No 10 at 12:45 this morning. It was replaced by No 8 at 3:35am, and by No. 3 at 10.10am, as Typhoon Vicente moved away from the city. 
 
The Development Bureau received reports of seven flooding cases and 580 fallen trees. The Highways Department received 446 reports of fallen trees, and Leisure & Cultural Services Department received seven such reports.
 
The Home Affairs Department opened 24 temporary shelters during the storm, and 268 people sought refuge at them.
 
The Hospital Authority said as at 9.30am, a total of 129 people, including 56 males and 73 females, aged 4 to 86, had sought medical treatment at the Accident & Emergency Departments at public hospitals. Seventy-two of them were admitted.
 
The Airport Authority said 60 flights had been cancelled, 60 delayed and 16 diverted to other places between midnight and 8am.
