Monorail to connect Kowloon East
October 13, 2011
Secretary for Development Carrie Lam says the Government wants to build an environmentally friendly transport system in Kowloon East, including a monorail link.
The 9km elevated monorail system will have 12 stations. It will link the Kai Tak commercial and business developments with the Hoi Bun Road Development and the Kwun Tong Ferry Pier Waterfront Development.
It is expected to be commissioned in 2023, at an estimated cost of $12 billion.
Mrs Lam said the Government wants to create a destination effect by establishing a zero-carbon emission building.
To enhance the streetscape and greening through urban design, an 11km promenade will also be developed.
Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) Wai Chi-sing said enhancing connectivity to the Kowloon hinterland will promote the regeneration of Kowloon Bay and Kwun Tong into a new central business district.
The Development Bureau will consult the public on the monorail system and other proposals.
