CE to tackle housing issues

August 02, 2017

Chief Executive Carrie Lam says she will make policy adjustments to tackle the unaffordable housing problem.

Speaking to the media today, Mrs Lam said the rate of property price increases exceeds that of wage rises, adding ordinary households spend two-thirds of their income on mortgages.

She said she will make housing policies more ownership-oriented.

The Government will also deal with the pricing issue of subsidised flats and launch a scheme for local first-time homebuyers who do not qualify for subsidised flats but cannot afford private properties.

She said she has asked the Transport & Housing Bureau to study the feasibility of premium waivers for people who wish to let or sub-let their Home Ownership Scheme flats.

The Development Bureau will form a task force this month to study ways to boost land supply and hold large-scale discussions on expanding land sources.

The discussions will help the Government formulate a long-term strategy on land supply, she added.
