Chief Executive CY Leung officiated at the opening ceremony for the MTR South Island Line today.
It will start services on December 28, connecting Ap Lei Chau to Admiralty.
It features four new MTR stations - Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons.
Mr Leung said the line will commute Southern District residents to the city within 11 minutes.
He said pedestrian facilities built as part of the project will enhance connectivity in the vicinity of the new MTR stations, benefitting local residents.
Lifts and walkways will not only provide convenient station access but will also allow the public to get around the neighbourhood more easily.
They include a pedestrian link to Aberdeen Channel Promenade from Wong Chuk Hang Station which opened in August.
