People should exercise their freedoms in a lawful way without abusing the rights of others.
Acting Chief Executive Carrie Lam made the comments today in response to the jailing of legislator Leung Kwok-hung yesterday.
He was sentenced to a week's prison for disturbing participants in a school debate which Mrs Lam attended last year.
Mrs Lam said people in Hong Kong enjoy the freedoms of speech, assembly and the right to protest, which are protected by the Basic Law, but it does not mean a people can strip others of their rights to attend an event in a peaceful manner.
Mrs Lam also noted President Xi Jinping’s endorsement of the work of the Chief Executive and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government yesterday at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation meeting in Peru.
She said the Government will strive to complete the Chief Executive’s policy pledges.
