Gov't following up on BL ruling

November 08, 2016

Chief Executive CY Leung said today the Government will follow up on yesterday's Basic Law interpretation by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, including holding Legislative Council by-elections if necessary.

Briefing the media before this morning's Executive Council meeting, Mr Leung said the interpretation has clarified the people’s understanding of the Basic Law and related Hong Kong laws.

He said the Government will act lawfully in accordance with the interpretation, and he did not rule out the possibility of by-elections.

The standing committee interpreted Basic Law Article 104 regarding the oath-taking of officials, including Legislative Councillors, who must pledge allegiance to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China and the promise to abide by the Basic Law.
