2017 reform first step: SJ

February 26, 2015

The 2017 universal suffrage proposal is not the endgame for improving Hong Kong's electoral freedoms, Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen says.

Speaking to the press after attending a District Council meeting today, he said when universal suffrage in electing the Chief Executive in 2017 is implemented, there will be room for improvement.

Although he cannot say which particular area can be amended at the moment, if the constitutional reform measure is adopted in 2017 the Chief Executive selection method can be improved according to Hong Kong’s situation and its experience with the new format.

He said he hopes legislators support the reform for the benefit of the public.
