The Department of Justice has announced that Deputy Law Officer (Civil Law) Christina Cheung will succeed Benedict Lai as Law Officer (Civil Law) from February 26.
Mr Lai will proceed on pre-retirement leave on the same day after 41 years of service with the Government.
Welcoming the appointment, Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen said that Ms Cheung has solid professional knowledge and experience in civil law, and proven leadership skills to lead the department’s civil division.
Mr Yuen also expressed his deep gratitude to Mr Lai for his dedication and valuable contributions over the years.
The Law Officer (Civil Law) is responsible for advising on the civil law aspects of a wide range of complex and sensitive issues of government policy and overseeing the development of arbitration and mediation in Hong Kong.
Ms Cheung was admitted as a solicitor in the United Kingdom in 1989 and in Hong Kong in 1996. She joined the Government in 1995 as Senior Crown Counsel and was promoted to Deputy Principal Government Counsel in 2001, and to Principal Government Counsel in 2008.
