Security bolstered after hacking attempt

October 04, 2014

The Government is closely monitoring its websites' security to ensure the normal operation of its information network.

Deputy Government Chief Information Officer Victor Lam said at a press conference today that the news.gov.hk website experienced an unusually high hit rate last night, making it very slow.

He said immediate action was taken to solve the problem and the website resumed normal services early this morning.

Government services were not affected by the cyber attack and the broadcast of Government information is continuing.

Mr Lam said the Government has software and firewalls to protect its IT system.

Bureaus and departments will closely monitor the situation and maintain close contact with Police and the Computer Emergency Response Team Co-ordination Centre to ensure cyber security.

Assistant Commissioner for Transport Albert Su said at the press conference that traffic is expected to be more congested on Monday, the first normal working day after the National Day long holidays, due to the closure of a number of major trunk roads.

He advised people going to work or school to pay attention to the department and bus companies’ announcement, and also to plan their trips in advance.
