CE meets NPCSC Chairman

(July 19, 2014)

Chief Executive CY Leung says the SAR Government will act as a bridge to convey Hong Kong people's opinions on universal suffrage in electing the Chief Executive in 2017 to the Central authorities.

Mr Leung briefed reporters today on his meeting with National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Zhang Dejiang in Shenzhen earlier in the day, during which they discussed the reports on the public consultation on constitutional development.

Mr Leung said Mr Zhang reiterated the long standing position of the Central authorities, to successfully implement universal suffrage in electing the Chief Executive in 2017.

In so doing, Basic Law provisions and relevant Standing Committee decisions must be strictly followed, he added.
