CE urges support for revamped poll plan

June 29, 2011
Chief Executive Donald Tsang today urged people to support the Government’s revised proposal for filling vacancies in the Legislative Council.

The proposed replacement mechanism was to avoid abuse of the existing replacement method which allowed legislators to resign en masse and stand for their seats again.

The 2011 Legislative Council (Amendment) Bill was initiated following the resignation of five lawmakers last spring to force a so-called “referendum”. Their actions triggered a public outcry, Mr Tsang said, and people demanded the Government act to avoid such abuse.

The proposed replacement mechanism was drawn up in response to public views, and he hoped people would support it.

Mr Tsang also said the Government has strived for building safety and will act in accordance with the law to handle illegal structures. He appealed to residents from the New Territories and urban areas to support the building policy.
