Five HK universities rank in top 100
The Education Bureau today welcomed the improved standings of universities funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in the latest World University Rankings, which are published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international higher education organisation.
The bureau highlighted that five UGC-funded universities stayed in the world’s top 100.
The University of Hong Kong holds its position at 11th in the world, while the overall rankings of the other seven UGC-funded universities have all risen significantly compared to the previous year.
The 2027 rankings represent the first time that two Hong Kong universities rank in the global top 20. The Chinese University of Hong Kong climbed 14 spots to 18th.
The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology advanced 11 positions to 33rd, while the Hong Kong Polytechnic University entered the world’s top 50 for the first time by rising four places to 50th.
The bureau said the rankings recognise the unremitting efforts of Hong Kong’s post-secondary education sector to strive for excellence, and bear testimony to the progress made by the Government in developing Hong Kong as an international post-secondary education hub and in nurturing and attracting top-notch talent.
It stressed that these achievements also affirm the effectiveness of the Government’s investment in education, and its full support via the UGC for institutions to innovate, optimise, expand and upgrade.
The improved overall rankings of the city’s institutions validate Hong Kong’s strong appeal as a premier hub for international high-end talent, the bureau added, highlighting that the Government is working closely with the higher education sector to align national strategies, Hong Kong’s needs, and universities’ development.
The bureau remarked that the Government will continue to promote the internationalisation and diversification of post-secondary education in order to enhance Hong Kong’s development momentum and contribute to the nation’s development.
