3 imported cases identified

November 29, 2021

The Centre for Health Protection today said that it is investigating three additional imported COVID-19 cases and that a previous confirmed case carries the Omicron variant.

The three new cases involve the L452R mutant strain. Two of the patients arrived in Hong Kong from medium-risk places and the other from a high-risk place.

As regards the COVID-19 case carrying the Omicron variant, the 37-year-old male patient arrived from Nigeria by flight ET608 via Ethiopia on November 24 and tested negative upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport.

He tested positive on November 26 during compulsory quarantine at a designated quarantine hotel and the whole genome sequencing confirmed the case carried the Omicron variant.

Together with this case, Hong Kong registered three imported cases with the Omicron variant.

The centre said it will closely monitor the latest developments of the mutant strain concerned and implement the most stringent measures to prevent it from entering the local community.

Meanwhile, in view of an imported case involving a patient who had been stranded at Hong Kong International Airport during the incubation period, one specified premises is included in the compulsory testing notice.

Regarding another previous imported case which involves a patient who had stayed in Hong Kong during the incubation period, people who had been at Lai Chi Kok Park Sports Centre during the specified period have to undergo additional testing.

Thirteen schools are also subject to compulsory testing due to outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infection or influenza-like illness.

Mobile specimen collection stations will be set up at various locations tomorrow to provide free testing services.
