Air pollution alert issued

September 7, 2019

The Environmental Protection Department warned that the Air Quality Health Index will remain higher than usual tomorrow.

The announcement was made after the index reached the “Serious” level at the Tung Chung Air Quality Monitoring station at 5pm.

Under the influence of a continental airstream, the weather in Hong Kong is fine and hot with light winds, the department said.

It pointed out the city is being affected by an air mass with higher background pollutant concentrations and that the high level of ozone has promoted the formation of nitrogen dioxide.

The Hong Kong Observatory forecasts that there will still be light winds for a few days.

Pollution levels are expected to remain higher than normal until the wind strengthens next week.
