Police respect press freedom

June 19, 2019

The Police operation to handle the public order event in the Admiralty area on June 12 was aimed against those using violence and unlawful acts, and was not against persons of any industry.

Secretary for Security John Lee made the remarks when replying to a question from lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting in the Legislative Council today on the treatment of journalists covering large-scale demonstrations.

Mr Lee said the Police at all times have to protect the people and maintain public order, adding that the objective of the Police operation that day was against those using violence and to restore order as soon as possible.

He also noted that even though manpower was tight, 32 Force Media Liaison Cadre officers were arranged to facilitate media coverage at the scene.

Officers at the scene worked in the highly stressful and dangerous environment, with certain operations undertaken in a split-second, Mr Lee added.

The security chief said the Police always appeal to media practitioners to put their personal safety first and comply with the instructions of officers at the scene while covering public order events, large-scale or chaotic demonstrations.

Noting media practitioners' concerns regarding the operation, Mr Lee said the Police attach great importance to the relationship with the media, respect press freedom and the media's right of reporting.

Anyone who is dissatisfied with the Police may complain to the Complaints Against Police Office, he said, adding the office has received 27 complaints referred by the Journalists Association with regard to the June 12 operation.
