Labour chief joins Geneva meetings

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Dr Law Chi-kwong today attended meetings of the International Labour Organization’s Centenary Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

Dr Law, as part of the People's Republic of China delegation, attended the centenary conference’s plenary sittings and a high-level session with national and international leaders.

 

He also attended a forum on technological pathways for decent work and meetings of the organisation’s Committee on the Application of Standards and the Standard-Setting Committee on violence and harassment in the world of work.

 

On the sidelines of the meetings, Dr Law met the System Initiative Management Team led by the World Economic Forum’s Centre for the New Economy & Society Head Saadia Zahidi to exchange views on the development of vocational education and skills upgrading of the labour force to prepare for the advent of the artificial intelligence era.

 

During a visit to the International Social Security Association, Dr Law met its Secretary General Marcelo Abi-Ramia Caetano to discuss international experience in tackling challenges arising from an ageing population, including the sustainability of the social security system, provision of long-term care and a shrinking labour force.

 

The labour chief also held lunch meetings with China Enterprise Confederation and All-China Federation of Trade Unions delegates.

 

He also met Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary & Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland Chen Xu to update him on Hong Kong's latest labour market and economic situation.
