Voter registration status clarified

June 18, 2019

The Registration & Electoral Office today clarified that no registered electors have been affected by the replacement of smart identity cards.

The office made the announcement in response to media reports that stated registered electors lost their registration status due to issues with the Immigration Department's computer system while replacing smart identity cards.

The office said about 280,000 electors had, in the course of replacing smart identity cards, authorised the department to transfer their data for the purpose of updating the registers of electors.

The office was notified on June 3 that due to technical issues with the department's computer system, the data of only 50,000 electors had been transferred. The particulars of the remaining 230,000 electors were then transferred to the office on June 5.

The office is now in the process of checking all electors' information and should it find any discrepancies, it will contact them for verification.

As of June 17, the office found the addresses of about 10% of 20,000 electors require updating.

The office emphasised that the status of registered electors will not be revoked unilaterally, adding that it attaches great importance to the accuracy and integrity of their data.
