September marked by typhoon

October 3, 2018

September was marked by the passage of Typhoon Mangkhut, which triggered the No. 10 Hurricane Signal, the Hong Kong Observatory said today.

The No. 10 signal was in effect for 10 hours, the second longest duration in the city since 1946, slightly less than the 11-hour record set by Typhoon York in 1999.

Due to the rainfall brought by Mangkhut, September was wetter than usual with the monthly rainfall at 383.3 millimetres, about 17% above normal.

The accumulated rainfall recorded in the first nine months of the year was 12% less than the normal figure for the period.

The month was also hotter than usual with a mean temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, 0.3 degrees above the normal figure.
