Retailer penalised for malpractice

August 7, 2018

A director of a building material retailer was sentenced to imprisonment for two weeks suspended for 12 months at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts today for contravening the Trade Descriptions Ordinance.

The Customs & Excise Department conducted an investigation after receiving information alleging the director was wrongly accepting payment in the course of business.

He was found to have accepted payment for ordering a batch of floor and wall tiles which he was unable to supply at the specified period of time and failed to provide a refund.

The department reminded traders to comply with the requirements of the ordinance.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is a $500,000 fine and five years’ imprisonment.

People can report violations by calling 2545 6182 or by email.
