Gov't to build new public markets

July 12, 2018

The Government hopes to announce the location of the new Tin Shui Wai public market within this year.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam told legislators today the Government is concerned about issues arising from the Link REIT and has rolled out measures to handle the matter.

She said the Government will build public markets in new development areas, including Tin Shui Wai, Tung Chung and Hung Shui Kiu, adding it is identifying suitable sites for the plan.

Mrs Lam said she hopes the location of the new Tin Shui Wai public market can be announced this year, followed by Tung Chung.

She said the Government will always attach the greatest importance to the overall interests of the community when considering any proposals made by the Link REIT which needs its approval.

On suggestions the Government buy back the Link REIT to address citizens' concern, Mrs Lam said it is unfeasible, citing the surge in the Link REIT's asset prices.

She said the Government will study how to step up its measures to help people affected.
