Estate revamps create more flats

July 4, 2018

The Government is willing to expedite the redevelopment of old housing estates in urban areas to increase flat supply.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam told legislators today the move will improve living conditions.

Using Kai Tak as an example, Mrs Lam said buildings in the area near the former airport were low-rise due to height restrictions.

She said the relocation of the airport to Chek Lap Kok gave the Housing Society potential to redevelop old housing estates in Kowloon City. However, at that time there was no land to rehouse affected residents.

Mrs Lam said the Government will reallocate nine private housing sites in Kai Tak and Anderson Road Quarry for public housing.

The Housing Society and the Housing Authority can discuss whether the developments should be used for sale or rental.
