Drug contamination report ordered

June 23, 2018

The Department of Health is testing the digestive drug Enzyplex due to suspected contamination and has asked its manufacturer to submit a report on the matter.

Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan said today the Government will study reports from the department and the drug company.

She believes the incident may not be a drug registration issue.

"The Department of Health's Drug Office has very stringent measures for drug registration.

"First of all, they have to be registered elsewhere. The office will also look into the reports provided by the company to see the efficacy and quality of the drugs."

Prof Chan added the drug is now off the market and she reminded people who bought it not to take it.

On the regulation of e-cigarettes, she said she has noted requests from medical and health professionals to further strengthen the regulatory framework.

She said the Government does not rule out the possibility of strengthening the regulatory framework, but must review evidence and different factors first.

"We will continue to look at the latest evidence from international and local studies. We want to understand more about the prevalence of the use of these new tobacco products.

"Also, we want to review the practices of other countries. We will continue to look at these factors to carve out our further actions."
