CE meets French Prime Minister

June 22, 2018

Chief Executive Carrie Lam met French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe in Paris yesterday.

Mrs Lam told Mr Philippe she looked forward to working with different sectors in France to seize future opportunities under the Belt & Road Initiative.

She hoped the Prime Minister and other senior French government officials will visit Hong Kong to learn about the city’s latest developments.

Before the meeting, Mrs Lam met Vice President of the French Parliamentary Office for Evaluation of Scientific & Technological Options and Fields Medalist Cedric Villani.

She exchanged views with him on topics including research and development in artificial intelligence, open data, promotion of STEM education and attracting talent on scientific research.

Mrs Lam then witnessed the signing of a memorandum between Institut Pasteur, the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation on establishing a research centre for infection, immunology and personalised medicine at the Hong Kong Science Park.

Collaboration with Institut Pasteur, a foundation dedicated to helping prevent and treat diseases, will help boost development in healthcare technologies, Mrs Lam said.

She also visited Station F, a business incubator for startups and expressed appreciation for the facilities, services and entrepreneurial atmosphere there.

Mrs Lam said she looked forward to having more of such facilities in Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area to encourage young people to innovate and start their own business.

In a business luncheon organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Mrs Lam said ties between Hong Kong and France have more than a century of history.

Mrs Lam added she is confident close ties between the two places will continue with a strong community of French people and enterprises in the city.

When attending the MIPIM Proptech Europe 2018 forum, she briefed participants on Hong Kong's advantages in innovation and technology.

She hoped similar proptech seminars will be held in Hong Kong.
