Phones banned from jury trials

June 21, 2018

Mobile phones or devices with photo or video recording abilities cannot be used in courtrooms where jury proceedings are held from July 19.

The Judiciary said today these proceedings cover civil or criminal jury trials at the High Court and inquests before the Coroner's Court involving a jury as jurors must be free from interference, pressure or distraction.

The devices must be switched off and court users must put them in bags or pockets when inside a courtroom for proceedings involving a jury, regardless of whether the court is in session.

The parties, legal representatives, members of law enforcement agencies and media in designated areas will be exempted from the restrictions.

The court can order any search or inspection of such devices belonging to all court users, including those exempted.

Courts can also apply similar or other restrictions on the use of such devices for other proceedings if needed.
