582 arrested for smuggling

February 21, 2018

The Customs & Excise Department arrested 582 people at boundary checkpoints during the Lunar New Year period.

Officers seized $53 million in contraband at multiple control points in a 19-day operation that began on February 1.

The haul included 105kg of drugs seized from parcels and passengers, and endangered species products, including ivory and shark fins.

About 840,000 illicit cigarettes and 81 litres of dutiable liquor was also confiscated.

The department said Hong Kong has a zero-tolerance approach towards cross-boundary smuggling and customs officers will be vigilant in combating such activities.
