Chinese historical play to be staged

June 16, 2016

The National Theatre of China will perform the play Beijing Fayuansi in July, starring national class-one performer Xi Meijuan and directed by Tian Qinxin.

Adapted from Li Ao's first full-length novel, Beijing Fayuansi recounts events in the lives of Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Emperor Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi during the late Qing dynasty against the backdrop of Fayuan Temple in Beijing.

Tian Qinxin has carved a niche in Chinese theatre by fusing contemporary artistic concepts and Eastern aesthetics. Among her notable productions are The Orphan of Zhao, The Yellow Storm and Ming Dynasty.

Xi Meijuan of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre has appeared in numerous stage productions, including Salam's Witch, The Taming of the Shrew, and China Dream for which she won the Plum Blossom Award.

Presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, the play will be staged in Putonghua with Chinese and English subtitles at 7.45pm from July 21 to 23 at the Cultural Centre.

Tickets are available at URBTIX.
