Czech musical to be staged

October 02, 2015

Theatre Space will perform the musical Czechmate in November, based on a true story about fighting totalitarianism and risking one's own life.

Events in the first half of 1968 led Czechoslovakians to feel their country was progressing towards a more democratic way of life under Communist Party leader Alexander Dubček. But on August 22, Prague residents work up to find their streets over-run by Russian tanks, marking the end of the Prague Spring.

People all over Czechoslovakia countered the Soviet invasion with street protests.

The play follows the experience of a group of student activists who lived through those protests, whose desperation culminates in one of them - Jan Palach - setting fire to himself in the centre of Prague.

The Cantonese musical was translated by Cheng Chun-chor and is directed by Jacob Yu, with lyrics by Cheng and Wong Ming-lok. The cast includes Angus Chan, Melodee Mak, Billy Sy, Karene Mak, Ernestine Ho, Edwin Wan, Tony Li, Ivy Lau, Johnxon Tai, Soraya Chau, Mill Ho, Peter Chan, Kenneth Cheung and Yang Kut-si.

Czechmate will be staged at 8pm on November 27 and 28, and at 3pm on November 28 and 29 at Kwai Tsing Theatre.

Tickets are available at URBTIX.
