Concert to honour composer Liu Tianhua

Erhu Master Wang Guotong will hold a concert in September to commemorate the 120th birthday of Chinese composer Liu Tianhua, best known for his innovative erhu work.

 

Wang Guotong was trained in erhu under the Liu Tianhua's disciples and he has performed in more than 30 countries around the globe. He has written and arranged hundreds of pieces of erhu music and published more than 20 books on the instrument. His artistic achievements have won him a place in many musical archives.

 

He has also created the square and round erhu, the low-register thick-stringed erhu and the flat octagonal gaohu, in collaboration with Man Ruixing. These inventions won him the Ministry of Culture's Technical Achievement Award.

 

Wang is currently a distinguished professor at Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, a visiting professor at the Central Conservatory of Music and the chairman of the Wang Guotong Erhu Fund Foundation.

 

The concert will take place at 8pm on September 5 in the Ko Shan Theatre New Wing auditorium. Tickets are available at URBTIX.
