The Museum of Art will be closed from August 3 for major renovation work, which will be completed in about three years.
Speaking to the media today, Leisure & Cultural Services Department Assistant Director Chan Shing-wai said, after 24 years of use, the museum needs upgrades in ceiling height, lighting and design.
The revamped museum will have 10,000 square metres of exhibition space, up from the current 7,000, and the ceiling height will rise from 3.5 to nine metres, allowing it to host a wider variety of exhibitions.
There will be two more galleries, one hosting a permanent exhibition on local arts.
The museum will still host exhibitions in the community during its closure, including mobile exhibition Museum of Art on Wheels. It is expected to reopen in 2019.
