Concert series to showcase young talent

More than 900 young musicians from 14 bands and orchestras will perform a selection of favourites at four concerts in April and May.

 

The first concert, featuring the Music Office Youth Brass Band, the Kowloon Youth Symphonic Band and the New Territories Youth Symphonic Band, will take place at 7.30pm on April 12 at the Kwai Tsing Theatre auditorium.

 

The bands will showcase John Williams's theme from Schindler's List arranged by Jan de Haan, Percy Aldridge Grainger's Molly on the Shore and Hisaishi's Laputa: Castle in the Sky arranged by Kojima Satomi.

 

The second concert, featuring the Hong Kong Children's Symphonic Band, the Music Office Children's Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Junior Chamber Ensemble, will take place at 8pm on April 18 at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall auditorium.

 

The groups will perform Alfred Reed's The Hounds of Spring, Zhu Yi's Axilixi and Dvorak's Slavonic Dance No. 1, Op. 46 arranged by Robert McCashin.

   

The New Territories Youth Chinese Orchestra, the Island Youth Chinese Orchestra, the Kowloon Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Music Office Junior Chinese Orchestra will take part in the third concert at 8pm on April 26 at the Hong Kong City Hall concert hall.

 

They will perform Xu Jingxin and Chen Dawei's Flying Apsaras, Zhou Yuguo's Dance of Southern Xinjiang, Su Wencheng's capriccio Taiwan and Gu Guanren's The General's Command.

 

The last concert, to be staged by the Island Youth Strings, the Kowloon Youth Strings, the New Territories Youth Strings and the Hong Kong Youth Strings, will be held at 3pm on May 11 at the Yuen Long Theatre auditorium.

 

They will perform Clemens' Fiddle-Fest, Mendelssohn's Sinfonia No.7 in D minor, 1st movement, Handel's Concerto Grosso No. 1, Op. 6 and selections from Grieg's Holberg Suite.

 

Tickets priced at $60, $40 and $20 for the first three concerts are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Tickets for the last concert will be available from April 11 onwards. Credit card bookings can be made at 2111 5999 and Internet bookings can be made at URBTIX.
