12 arrested in anti-drink driving blitz

*
Hong Kong Police

Police have arrested 12 drivers who failed to pass breath tests for drink-driving-related offences in a citywide crackdown.

From July 17 to 20, 48 roadblocks were set up and a total of 785 drivers were given breath tests.

Twelve were arrested for failing to pass the breath tests. Nine of those arrested were later found to have proportions of alcohol exceeding the prescribed limit and will be charged with the offence.

Since the Road Traffic Legislation (Amendment) Ordinance 2008 took effect on February 9, the Police have breath-tested 17,483 drivers and arrested 107 of them for failing the test.

Of these arrested, 81 were found to have proportions of alcohol exceeding the prescribed limit.

Motorists should not drive after drinking alcohol. Offenders may face a fine of up to $25,000, three years in jail and 10 driving-offence points. They may also be disqualified from driving for at least three months on a first conviction, and at least two years on a second.
