Police have arrested a 34-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman in Kwai Chung allegedly swindling $130,000 from two people by claiming to be bank staff and a wedding banquet game hostess.
Two women, 18 and 21, were hired by a man through the Internet as wedding banquet hostesses in an Admiralty hotel on December 30. Each guest from six or seven tables was asked to place at least $100 in red packets provided by the pair for a lucky draw. The pair collected the money and fled.
On January 14 a woman reported she had been cheated of $130,000 by a woman pretending to be a staff member of a Mong Kok bank.
The same man hired two women, 19 and 21, again via the Internet. He represented himself as the bank staff member and told the two to ask customers if they needed to deposit more than $100,000. The victim handed over the money to one of the women who then passed it to the man.
The two people arrested have been detained for questioning.
Any victims of similar deception cases should call Police on 2398 6279 or 2381 1052.
