Labour Day passenger traffic to rise 12%

*
Immigration Department

A 12% rise in passenger traffic through Hong Kong's checkpoints is expected during the Labour Day holidays, the Immigration Department says.

The peak period of cross-boundary traffic will fall between April 30 and May 4. It is estimated about 1.39 million passengers - a daily average of 278,000 - will use the Lo Wu checkpoint.

The passenger arrival peak at Lo Wu will be on May 1, with 163,000 arriving in Hong Kong, while the number of departing passengers may reach a peak of 170,000 on May 3.

Passenger traffic at Lok Ma Chau checkpoint will also be heavy, with a forecast of about 634,000 passengers, or a daily average of 127,000. The number of arriving passengers may reach the peak on May 1, while the departure peak will fall on May 3.

The department has arranged for extra officers to be posted at checkpoints during the holiday period. A joint command centre will be set up at Lo Wu checkpoint and contingency measures have been drawn up to handle any incidents.

Daily passenger statistics for the Labour Day holidays will be uploaded here.
